Frances Illa (Clark) Beach was born in Kentucky, college educated, and served as a nurse in WWII (part of it in London during the Blitz). She had intended on making the army a career, but was drummed out on a full medical discharge due to failing hearing.

After her discharge she headed home, stopped long enough to pack up, and then she and girlfriend headed west to California. She met my dad on a double blind date and they were married not long after.

Being a stay at home wife didn't slow her down - she took piano lessons, and learned to cook, bake and sew at a professional level.

She turned into a crack genealogy researcher in the mid-60s, and when home computers became available in the early '80s, she bought an IBM PC XT (long before Windows - it was all DOS back then). She asked my dad for permission to buy it.
It cost the equivalent of $13,000 in today's dollars(!) but his answer "I guess so" showed how much he cared for her.

She taught herself Wordstar, just about the only word processor available at the time and used the heck out of it. There was no Internet back then, so she used it primarily for writing letters (LOTS of letters) to other genealogy researchers.

She also purchased a very early genealogy database program and entered hundreds and hundreds of people into it. She was still doing research until shortly before she passed in '95.

She was a good wife, a great mom and grandmother, and we all still miss her.
