AUGUSTA - Theodore R. Beck, 78, beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta. He was born Aug. 10, 1934, in Huntington, N.Y., the first child of the late Theodore A. Beck and Bernadine R. (Bedell) Beck.
He attended St. Hugh's Catholic School and Central High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1949 and served on the U.S.S. Kyne out of the Brooklyn Naval Yard. He was discharged in February 1952 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in June 1952, serving until his medical retirement in February 1969. During his military career, he was stationed in numerous U.S. and overseas bases, including Vietnam. He and his family thoroughly enjoyed the three years spent in Japan. He retired from the Air Force as master sergeant and was noncommissioned officer in charge of the Emergency Action Branch of the U.S. Air Force Command Post at the Pentagon. He was awarded many medals and citations, which included the Air Force Commendation Medal.

Upon retirement, he went to work for Parker K. Baily Moving and Storage Co. in Presque Isle, where he was manager of the Claims Department for Baily's; United Van Lines, and North American. The family moved to Augusta in 1973 where he worked in the Master Charge Department of Depositors Trust Corp. He went to work for the State of Maine in the Department of Human Services in 1974 as an income maintenance specialist. He also worked as service area manager and later was promoted to manager of the Child and Adult Care Food Program.

He was predeceased by his brother, Joseph J. Beck. He is survived by his wife, Esther M. (Cannon) Beck, of Presque Isle, whom he married on Jan. 10, 1954, in Huntington; a son, Matthew Paul Beck, and his wife, Gail (Ferland) Beck; a grandson, Kevin M. Beck, and his wife, Jen, of Fairfield; and a granddaughter, Kelly Anne Beck, of Lewiston. He is also survived by three sisters, Bernadine M. Lechner, of Ansonia, Conn., Ann Marie Williams, of Bridgeport, Conn., Barbara M. Schuler, of Port Jefferson, N.Y.; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Burial and committal prayers will be at the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. (Morning Sentinel 6/1/2013 & Plummer Funeral Home)
