Maria was born in 1832 in Ohio. Some researchers list her birth year as 1831, but the tombstone reads 1832. Maria married William Barnes shortly before 1850. She appears with him in the 1850 census. William is listed in that census as a doctor. William died shortly after 1850 and the couple didn't have any children during their brief marriage. Maria married John Crubaugh, a man almost 20 years her senior, on 25 Mar 1852 in Stark County, Ohio. Maria and John had six children - Almira J. Crubaugh Sharp (1853-1911), William J. Crubaugh (1856-1908), Violet A. Crubaugh Kershaw (1858-<1898), Charles G. Crubaugh (1859-1918), Ora Belle Crubaugh Miller (1864-1932) and Jennie E. Crubaugh Norton Conner Kershaw Rowe Houghton (1869-1935). John Crubaugh and Maria separated sometime shortly before 1880. John was admitted to the Disabled Veterans Home in Dayton, OH in 1880, but he listed his daughter, Ora Belle, as his contact. John died in 1883, but Maria never remarried. She died in 1902.
