James Hyde Forbes was born in Alton, Illinois. He attended Alton High School and Washington and Lee University. He followed his father and grandfather as president of the Jas. H. Forbes Tea and Coffee Company in St. Louis. He commuted daily from Alton, following in the part of father and grandfather. In 1938 he married Muriel Morgan McKelvey and moved to St. Louis. They had one son, Charles Phinney Forbes, born in 1940. The moved to Sarasota, Florida, in 1962. He died there in 1968, and was buried in the family plot in the Alton Memorial Cemetery.
