Shortly after midnight on Wednesday the spirit of John A. Kropp, who had been lingering between life and death for many months, passed into the other world. His death was not unexpected, his family and other relatives being prepared any moment for the inevitable summons to come. Some two years ago Mr. Kropp was taken ill, his sickness terminating in Bright's disease and since that time he had been gradually failing although he was able to be up and around.

John A. Kropp was a native of Sheboygan County where he was born March 12, 1862, and when about twenty years of age came to Hilbert and worked at the blacksmith trade for Carl Arndt. In 1882 he was united in marriage with Margaret Braun of the town of Woodville and shortly after they engaged in the hotel business. He was attentive to business, accommodating to his patrons and his genial, good nature made him friends with all who came in contact with him.

During the years he conducted the hotel Hilbert he prospered and was counted among the active business men of the town. His push and energy attracted men to him not only in his home town but outside and his acquaintance extended throughout the state. In 1897 he was appointed to the office of postmaster of Hilbert and was holding that position when death claimed him.

Mr. Kropp was a very popular man in his community and enjoyed the esteem and respect of every one who knew him thoroughly. He was public spirited and generous responding freely to all civic and charitable calls, true to his friends and tolerant with his enemies, harboring no ill will for those who opposed or differed with him in opinion. In private life and in his home he was unselfish and entirely devoted to the welfare of his family. He was a sincere member of the Catholic church and in the advancement of the same devoted his best efforts, being a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

He is survived by his widow, two sons, Peter and John and a daughter, Miss Rose. Also by two brothers, Anton of Sheboygan and Peter of Eagle Gorge, Wash., and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Pelsey of Sheboygan and Mrs. Anna Hinze of New Holstein.
