Mary was the oldest of ten children born to James Allen Helms and his wife Elizabeth Ann Adams. Her birth date of 28 Sep 1862 is from their son James M. Harrelson's Bible in a descendant's possession, but her full name was not listed, only Mary. This birth year is logical, as her parents were married in 1861. However, her birth date was listed as May 1864 on the 1900 Census for Covington County, AL. Although as the 1862 would have shown her about 11 years older than her husband, she may have modified her birth year a bit for the 1900 Census, to lessen the gap.
No death date was listed in that Harrelson Bible. The family memory was that she died in 1927 while they were digging peanuts. In that era it was usually done in August or September. This memorial does not allow a date range of Aug-Sep to be entered, so I have arbitrarily chosen September since that would be the longest. If anyone has better dates, please contact me.
