HENDERSON -- Senator Paul Herron Jr., 80, Henderson, Kentucky, died at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, Indiana.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church. A native of Union County, he was a graduate of Sturgis High School and University of Indiana. Before entering public service, he operated Herron Auction and Realty, which he founded in 1952. He served as Henderson County Judge-Executive from 1986 to 1994, during which he laid the groundwork for the construction of the new Henderson County Detention Center and led efforts to improve bridges and roadways throughout the county. He served as State Senator since being first elected in 1995 and represented Henderson, Union, Webster, Crittenden, Caldwell, and Livingston counties. He was also a member of the Army Reserve, Henderson Moose Lodge, Henderson Elks Lodge, American Legion, DeKoven Masonic Lodge, Rizpah Temple Madisonville, and Henderson County Shrine Club. He also served on numerous boards, including American Red Cross, Henderson County Senior Citizens, Drug/Alcohol Council, Earl C. Clements Job Corps, Human Relations, Industrial Foundation, Economic Development, Literacy Council, Green River Area Development and Audubon Area Community Services.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Mary McCann Herron; two sons, Paul Herron III, and his wife, Brenda Marks-Herron, and Michael Herron and his wife, Julie Herron; grandchildren and their spouses, Michele and Bill Dunn, Mark and Marcy Herron, Marcy and Chad Sutton, Kevin Herron, Graham Herron, Erica Winebarger and Troy and Tracy Marks; and great-grandchildren, Megan and Kelsey Dunn, Taylor and Tara Herron and Clay Sutton.

Services will be at 2 p.m. (CST) Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Henderson, Kentucky. The Reverend Gary Chapman and Father J. Edward Bradley will officiate. Entombment will be in Fairmont Cemetery Mausoleum in Henderson, Kentucky.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. (CST) Friday, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. (CST) Saturday and 9 a.m. to noon (CST) Sunday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home in Henderson and after 1 p.m. (CST) Sunday at the church.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Henderson County American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Pallbearers will be Graham Herron, Chad Sutton, Kevin Herron, Bill Dunn, Mark Herron, and Richard Overby.
