James Vinson Abbott married Nancy/Nancey Jane Thomas in Delaware County, Indiana, on April 24, 1858. Their children were:
Dominicus (born circa 1859)
John (born and died April 1860) and his twin sister
Rosey (born April, died May 1860)
George (born circa 1860)
Lydia E (born circa 1863, died July 20, 1871)
Flora B (Abbott) Ball (born circa 1865, married Charles Ball January 1 1888)
James William (born circa 1868, died May 13, 1899)
Margaret "Maggie" (born circa 1870) and
Elmer (born April 1973, married Bessie Kirby December 3 1904, died August 21 1908)

In the 1900 census, Nancy is listed as having given birth to nine children with four surviving. By 1910, she has only three left following the death of son Elmer, and residing in the home are a widowed daughter-in-law, Bessie, and granddaughter, Mildred. By 1920, James is listed as a widower.

In his will he lists two daughters, Flora Ball and Margaret J Abbott, and grandchildren, Edna (Abbott) Fowler (married Lemuel Fowler May 29 1891), Jessie (Abbott) Lennington (married Claude Lenington January 17 1886), Lena Westfall (born June 1 1884, married L A Westfall August 20 1913), and Mildred Abbott.

It appears that this stone was set pre-need and went unused as Nancy was buried in Union Cemetery in Eaton. It could be that Granville cemetery had already begun to fall into disrepair by 1916 or that this was intended to serve as a marker for the children of James and Nancy. James's will directs his executor 'to purchase and have placed at the head of my grave a marker twenty-two inches long, fifteen inches high and not less than 10 inches thick, and that he have carved thereon my full name and my full age, including years months and days, and that said executor have erected and placed at the grave of my wife, a similar stone and have carved thereon, her full name and full ageed including years months and days.' That description fits perfectly the two stones set for James and Nancy in Union Cemetery.
