Neil Ellsworth Ferguson, 83, of Portage, passed away peacefully on Dec. 27, 2011, at King Veterans Home. Neil was born in Whitewater on Feb. 28, 1928, to Vern and Gladys (Fonda) Ferguson. He had two siblings – the late Joyce (Karl) Koenke of Urbana, IL, and Jeanette (Russ) Johnson of Weyauwega.

Neil married Beverly Acklam in 1950. They had four daughters. Their first daughter, Lynn Dee, was born and died within a few weeks while Neil was serving in Korea. His surviving three daughters are Pamela (Bob) Ellingson of Lakewood, Leslie (Curtis) Wycklendt of Glendale, and Valerie (Marc) Blazich of Wauwatosa. He also had an AFS daughter, Gloria Concha (Leonardo) Diez of Santiago, Chile.

He had six grandchildren: Marnie (Ellingson) Kleman, Laura Ellingson, Andrew Wycklendt, Sheila (Wycklendt) Piotrowski, and Makenzie and Aaron Blazich.

Neil had served in the Army Medical Corps during the Korean War.

He received a business degree at Milton College. He was employed by General Motors in Janesville as a production control supervisor. Neil enjoyed bridge, bowling, and Little Theater in Janesville. He built each of the four family homes, as well as an apartment and several duplexes.

Time was spent between the Janesville residence and a home on Whitewater Lake where Neil enjoyed waterskiing, sailing, and hosting parties with his family. Neil and Bev purchased a resort on the lake after his retirement from GM.

Neil and Bev divorced in 1983. He eventually made his home for 25 years in Portage. His ready smile and pleasantries to all are being remembered by those he greeted for the 15 years he worked as a crossing guard and the five years as a customer greeter at Walmart.

Neil battled Parkinson's disease which eventually led to his two-month stay at the Wisconsin Veteran's Home in King, WI.

Inurnment will be private, with a celebration of Neil's life to be scheduled in the future.

Neil quoted the following Irish blessing at significant events:

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
