Songwriter. He was known primarily for his song “By the Waters of Minnetonka". As a member of the Indianist movement, this song was inspired by a singer, Sitting Eagle, that he heard while visiting the Crow Reservation in Montana in October 1911. He recorded the song on a portable Edison Records recording device. After playing his music in the US and Europe, he received a grant from the Scientific Research Society of American to continue his research into Native American Music. Much of this research collection is now housed in the Smithsonian Institution.
