Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He was a Captain in the 1st US Cavalry, when resigned to serve as an officer in the Confederate Army in 1861. His early Confederate military career was performing administrative duties when promoted Colonel in command of the 3rd South Carolina Military District in May 1862. Promoted Brigadier General, he remained in command of the 3rd district until May 1864, when he was ordered, with a brigade to reinforce General PT Beauregard in Virginia. On May 24, 1864, at a battle near Richmond, his right leg was shattered and he was captured by Union troops. After recovering, he was prisoner exchanged in October and returned to duty assigned to garrison duty in Weldon, North Carolina where he remained until the war ended.
