Born in Pennsylvania and moved with his parents to Salem NC at the age of 9 where he was educated at the Boys School. He later volunteered with the Confederacy and was with the 2nd Battalion, Company G as 1st Sergeant until promoted to Captain and Assistant Brigade Quartermaster in December 1863. He was captured on Roanoke Island NC on Feb 8th 1862 by General Burnsides Forces and later paroled at Elizabeth City NC on Feb 21st 1862 and returned to Confederate Service. He was married to Jane Amanda Johnson.
