Katie's father, was killed in action at the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee on April 6th 1862. His death left Katie and her sister, Margaret Jane, to be raised by their mother. They continued to live in Troy and were active members of Long Cane A.R.P. Young Katie attended Woodlawn Academy and taught by her uncle, Edmund L. Patton; who later was president of Erskine College in Due West and South Carolina College (now University) in Columbia.
At the age of 23, Katie married Warren Harvey Flenniken, son of the late Rev. Flenniken and Mrs. Jane Hearst Pressly Flenniken-Torbit. They would make their home in Winnsboro and raise their five known children:

Katie Patton Flenniken became very active in the Ladies Association (later Daughters of the Confederacy) in Winnsboro; serving as their president for a number of years. She also was very active in the A.R.P. church.
In 1939 just before Warren's death; Warren and Katie Flenniken were interview for a project through the WPA called "Folklore Stories" where they both recounted their childhoods, life during the civil war and the old South after the war. These interviews are now part of the achieves at the Library of Congress.
Katherine "Katie" Kennedy Patton Flenniken departed this life on January 21st 1941 at the age 84. She was laid to rest in Old A.R.P. Cemetery near her husband and two children that preceded her; known throughout the community as a "remarkable loved and respected lady."
