Thomas lived on an old farm for forty years, taking care of parents & young brothers and sisters. His father died in his 91st year. In 1852 he purchased a farm in Belmont, Ontario and moved there in September. He began to clear his farm and improving the town. Building a school house, churches, giving the land for the Episcopal, Presbyterian & Methodist churches. He raised family of 8 sons and 1 daughter. Making sure all were educated and helped in starting their businesses.
He sold this farm and moved to London, Ontario where he lived 5 years. He then moved to Ontario, California and purchased an orange grove and resided until his death. He had purchased large track of land in town and began laying it out as a park. It was completed one month before he died. He gave the park to the town and it was named "Nugent Park".

All children attended funeral except Morgan who was deceased and daughter Amanda too sick to attend.
