Fred Aschbrenner came to the United States in 1856 with his parents and siblings. According to the account reproduced in the Stratford Centennial (1991), he noted that "we travelled by rail from New York to Milwaukee and from there to Beaver Dam, the railroad terminal. An old Indian trail led from Beaver Dam to Wausau. From Wausau we travelled to the town of Berlin, some fourteen miles to the north of Wausau. We purchased our land for a dollar and a quarter an acre" (p. 133).

In 1862 Fred enlisted in the army to serve in the Civil War. He served in Company I, First regiment of the Wisconsin calvary. Fred was honorably discharged after almost three years of service, when the war ended.

Fred married Bertha Kluender on March 3, 1871. They farmed for many years and in 1902 they moved to Stratford where they continued farming. Fred died in December of 1935.
