KILLED BY THE CARS
NEAR HILBERT ON THURSDAY

Mathias Gehl, a Farmer of the Town of Woodville, Found Dead Near the Track of the Milwaukee Road
__________________________
Shorty after noon on Thursday, a telephone message was received by The Times from Hilbert, stating that a man had been found dead near the tracks of the Milwaukee road, one-half mile south of that village about noon, by two strangers who were walking on the track. The village authorities were at one notified and a jury was empanelled by Justice J. K. Dayton to investigate the matter.
How the unfortunate man met his death is not known, but the theory advanced by some is that he was lying on the track and was struck by the south-bound passenger which left Hilbert about two o’clock Thursday morning and was instantly killed. It was found that his left arm was broken between the elbow and wrist, left foot dislocated at the ankle joint, right leg broken above the ankle and at the hip, A deep gash was cut in this forehead and he was bruised about the chest.
Gehl had spent the day at a barn raising on the farm of Frank Kloeppel and in the evening went to the village. He remained in town for a time and then departed and that was the last seen of him alive. It is thought he intended to walk on the track to his home and when reaching the railroad, turned south instead of north. Becoming bewildered, he sat down on the track, fell asleep and was struck by the train. His body was thrown some ten feet from the track. The deceased person was about thirty-five years of age.
He leaves a widow and four children to mourn his sudden death.
