He served in the US Army during WWI with Iowa's 349th Infantry and spent one year in France. After the war, he farmed with his brother George, but they lost everything in the Great Depression.
Bill married his first wife, Edith Pasch on 11 Jan 1938 in Cedar Falls IA. They had one son, Sherman, before they divorced.
On 1 Feb 1944, he married Thelma Clara Petersen, and in October 1944, he started his business doing plumbing, carpentry and pump work. He spent many hours up in windmills doing repair work. Grueling work and an explosion in a well he was working on left him disabled in later life.
Bill and Thelma had 4 children, Herm, Frank, Olinda, and Bill.
He had a keen mind for mathematics and could calculate in his head faster than most people can do it on a calculator. He loved barn dances and telling jokes.
Bill died at the Atlantic Hospital in Atlantic IA. His wife Thelma says that at the moment of his death, she was sleeping, but sat straight up in bed, and knew he had passed.
