James was the son of Benjamin Dunnaway Vassar of Kentucky and Rachel McCracken Brown of Tennessee. He wed Sisalina Shinn of Arkansas on June 4, 1868, in Sonoma County, California. Of their union were born: Charles Vassar; Willie Vassar; and Elizabeth J. "Lizzie" Vassar (March 1876, Sonoma County, California - before 1930, Cloverdale, Sonoma County, California). James passed on to his maker at 73 years of age.
The siblings of James were: Mary Polly Vassar (1833, Plattsburg, Clinton, Missouri - ); Samuel Vassar; Rebecca Vassar (1836, Plattsburg, Clinton County, Missouri - ); James Brown Vassar; Nicholas Simpson Vassar; William Jasper Vassar; Jarratt McCracken Vassar; Andrew Jackson Vassar; and Ritty Ann Vassar (1856, California - ). The family moved to the City of Sonoma, California then Marin County, before the Civil War, and north to Healdsburg, Sanel (Hopland), and Cloverdale by the 1860's.
