Ophelia was born in 1892, in Nada, Texas. She was the second youngest daughter of Claus Diedrich Bernard Frels from Oldenburg and Wilhemine "Minnie" Schoellmann of Frelsburg, Texas, whose family was originally from Westphalia and also of Prussian heritage. Their families were Roman Catholic and left Prussia due to the difficulties of Kulturkampf before the unification of Germany. Ophelia was the 11th of their 14 children. Two of her sisters passed away in childhood. Her parents moved the family from Colorado county to Wharton county, where she finished school. She met and married Lamar Lemuel Hathorn ( a direct descendant of the infamous magistrate, John Hathorn of Salem, Massachusetts) there in 1915. They raised six beautiful children together in El Campo, Texas and remained married 65 years until parted by death. They passed away within a year of each other.
