William sailed alone for America some time during the year 1827, settling first at Middleton, Conn., where he resided for about 3 years, where he was employed as a weaver of woolen goods.

Malinda did not come to America with her husband; she with her 3 children, Enoch, Ann, & William sailed from some port in England for the US about 1 Dec. 1827 and arrived at New York on 4 March 1828.

She was so long coming that her husband had given her up for lost. After she had been at sea for about 1 month the ship encountered a storm, and was blown back almost to its starting point. The voyage was a most stormy one. She wore her wedding ring on the voyage, and it was worn through from holding on to an iron bar in her cabin to keep herself from being thrown out on the floor.

In those days it was the custom of passengers to take their own provisions for the voyage. Malinda and the other passengers not anticipating such an extended voyage did not take sufficient provisions, and the captain issued an order that those having provisions were to divide with those who had exhausted their scanty store, and for many days there was but little to eat.

During the voyage Malinda attempted to go on deck, when she fell through a hatch breaking several ribs and otherwise bruising her body. She also had the grief of losing her baby, William, who died and was buried at sea.

From Middleton, Conn., William and family moved to near Dayton, Ohio, where they resided a short time, and then moving to Twinsburgh, Summit Co., Ohio, where they resided about 3 years; moving thence to Northfield, Summit Co., Ohio; and from thence to Brecksville, Ohio, where they resided several years. From Brecksville, they moved to Richland Co., settling near Lucas, where he operated a woolen mill in the summer time and a sawmill in the winter time.

William and family resided in different parts of Richland Co., until Sept 1852, when he sold out his business and moved to Guthrie Co., Iowa, settling near Dale, where he continued to reside until his death in 1865, at the age of 67.
