Michael Mock II was named for his grandfather (FAG # 6882807). They were of German descent. Michael I's father was their original Mock ancestor in America, Thomas (FAG #62546320). Thomas was born in Germany and arrived in North Carolina in 1751 with a group of Lutheran settlers who came in anticipation of owning farm land and to escape religious persecution.

Michael was one of only three children. His father Alexander "Chick" Mock owned a large farm in Oaklandon, Indiana (part of which is now the Mock Cemetery where Michael II and his wife Sarah Jane are buried). While living on a farm was never easy in those days, Michael grew up with relative economic security, confident in the knowledge that he, too, would inherit land.

In 1864 at age twenty-two he married Sarah Jane Cory, aged twenty. A family story is that Sarah Jane was nearly engaged to a young man who left to fight in the Civil War, but fell in love with Michael while she was waiting for him to return. Ronald Stoner has her old ink-faded autograph book which contains a letter from this suitor. While he was gone, Sarah Jane married Michael. Sarah Jane and Michael both look young and handsome in their wedding photo. (See Sarah Janes's FAG memorial to view photo.) In later life, Sarah Jane had a reputation for being somewhat irascible and domineering. The family stories are that her grandchildren usually avoided being within range of her cane. The photos of Michael as an old man with his gray beard and dark clothing look as if he, too, might have been severe. However, the grandchildren who spent their childhood years living in Michael and Sarah Jane's household while their father Robert, the youngest child of Michael and Sarah Jane, farmed the land say that Michael was gentle and kind.

See their son Robert's bio (FAG memorial linked below). Their grandson Bob, who grew up on their farm, provides an interesting and detailed description of life in the Michael and Sarah Jane household.
