This stone is listed on page 16 of Cemetery Records of Southern Illinois by Robert E. Turman (1946), which was edited by Madge Yeager Olson (1977). It states: "Cater, T. R., Co. M, 3rd Ky. Cav. No other data. (Thomas R.) Union - Civil War."

Broken stone with only 3rd KY visible.

Son of Joseph & Jemima (Williams) Cater. Born in Vanderburgh County, Indiana.

Cpl., Co. M, 3rd Kentucky Cavalry.
Enlisted (1st) at Evansville, Indiana for 3 yrs service and then Enrolled 5 Nov 1861 at Camp Silas Miller, Kentucky. Age: 41 years. Re-enlisted on 13 Dec 1861 at Calhoun, Kentucky. Later promoted to Corporal. Reduced to rank from Corporal, 7 Apr 1863 (court-martial). Re-enlisted at end of 3 years service at Nashville, Tennessee. Later promoted to Full Corporal. Mustered out on 15 Jul 1865 at Lexington, Kentucky.
