Wilma Smith Moore Williams Wilson, seventh child of Asa and Rosa (McClure) Smith was born at Earlham February 12, 1925. She was baptized as a child in the Penn Center Church and as a teenager became a member of the Methodist Church in Dexter. She attended a country school, the Earlham Consolidated School, and from 1933, when her parents moved to Dexter, she attended and graduated from Dexter Public School. She also attended some secretarial courses through Area XI college and medical technology classes.
August 28, 1944, Wilma was married to Calvin S. Moore Jr. in Galveston, Texas, where he was stationed in the navy, serving on a mine sweeper for 4 years. After his discharge, they resided on his parents farm near Dexter where they raised 5 sons: Sherman, Mickey, Andrew, Anthony and Samuel. Calvin passed away in March, 1966.
Later Wilma was married to John (Jack) Williams, who farmed near Dexter and lived there until they retired to Stuart in 1984. With Jack she inherited 2 stepsons, John R. and Robert E. and 2 stepdaughters, Karma and Marie. She and Jack enjoyed traveling to many places in the world, including all 50 states. Since many of their children lived at distant locations, this was made even more memorable.
Outside the home, Wilma worked in the make-up department in 3 newspapers, and at onetime was a part-time clerk in the Dexter Post Office. She also worked as a secretary in Mercy Hospital in Des Moines for 10 years. But most of her extra time was spent attending school activities of her children, and church activities. She enjoyed her family immensely; also gardening, raising flowers, and most of all, the many family gatherings on the farm. She made good use of a hobby beginning in high school, photography, and had many excellent subjects including all the family and travels. Other things she enjoyed were quilting and handicrafts, most of which went to families as they married.
She had many interests, but her church was her main interest where she served in many areas, teacher of youth, choir member, and several offices in the United Methodist Women. She became a member of the Dexter DT after retiring and the Stuart Garden Club. She belonged to the Nockle Card Club for many years and enjoyed entertaining at the Nursing Homes. She and Jack enjoyed dancing with a band. Wilma was also a regular volunteer at the Stuart Community Care Center, for several years.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Calvin Moore and John Williams, 4 sisters, Ila Dolan, Myrtle McCormick, Gladys Wilson, and Lucille Pauline who died in infancy; 3 brothers Lyle, Homer and Raymond Smith. Surviving are her husband and companion of 7 years, Floyd Wilson; sons Sherman and wife Pamela of Rocklin, CA, Mickey and Wife Pilar of Miami, FL, Andrew and wife Cathy of Murfreesboro, TN, Anthony of Tracy City TN, and Samuel of Lincoln, CA; sister-in-law Pauline Smith of Des Moines; 13 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren; and 6 step-great-grandchildren.
