A daughter of Hinds and Barbara (Goudie) Harper, Barbara like her parents, was a native of Shetland Islands, Scotland. The Harper family, then numbering five children, crossed the Atlantic and became residents of Genesee Co., New York in 1837. Remaining there for ten years, four more children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Harper. In 1847 the family located at Magnolia Township, Rock Co., WI. Here Mrs. Harper passed away in July of 1862. Thereafter Mr. Harper located in Neshkoro where he shared a home with his oldest daughter, Mrs. Andrew Scobie, and where he passed away nearly sixteen years later on April 6, 1878 at the age of 82. The children of Mr. and Mrs. Harper included: Christina, wife of Sylvester Craig, Barbara, wife of H. G. Otis Childs, Margaret, wife of A. W. Peters, Andrew, Elizabeth, wife of Andrew Scobie, Janet, wife of Hiram Preston, Mary, whom died in infancy, and Civil War Veterans William H and Robert W.

Barbara married July 10, 1848 at the age of 19 to Harrison G Otis Childs, son of Wm and Sally Childs and a native of Stafford, Genesee, NY. To their union were born four sons: Edwin, William Otis, Martin L, and Wesley H. All of Barbara's children would eventually make their homes in the eastern counties of Washington State. She is today survived by the descendants of her oldest son, Edwin Benton Childs.

Barbara rests here beside her father. HGO passed away at Lincoln Co. WA in 1897 and rest beside their son, Wesley H Childs, at Lafollette cemetery. Her mother rests beside the youngest Harper sibling, Robert W Harper, at West Magnolia Cemetery, Rock Co, WI. Robert died March 1863 in Nashville, TN due to the trials and hardships related to war.

Subsequent to her death, HGO Childs married twice more and fathered children by each of these marriages.
