BIG STONE GAP, Va. - "Johnny" Vernon Blevins, 84, died Sunday (April 7, 2002) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

He resided in Big Stone Gap his entire life and was retired from Pet Dairy with 31 years of service. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, having served as a corporal with Casual Co. MB, Quantico, Va., and the South Pacific.

He was a member of the Big Stone Gap VFW Post #5715 and a member of the N.R.A. He was a Christian and member of the Legion Memorial United Methodist Church in Powell Valley.

He was preceded in death by his parents, W.J. and Minnie (Skeen) Blevins; brothers, Bascom Blevins, Curtis Blevins, Cecil Blevins and Elmer K. Blevins.

Surviving are his twin brother, Virgil Blevins and wife Marie of Big Stone Gap; sisters, Mrs. Gilbert "Mabel" Robinette of Hilton Head, S.C., Mrs. Harvey "Thelma" Smith of Big Stone Gap, and Mrs. Reba Cutting of Big Stone Gap; sister-in-law, Inez Blevins of Big Stone Gap; nieces and nephews, Jack Robinette, Betty Watson, Bill Smith, Nancy Maltsberger, Becky and James Dee Begley, Cheryl Pangburn, Gary Cutting, Carolyn Hanus, Kenny, Steve and Mark Blevins; special great-nieces, Angela and Cindy Begley, Kristina Blevins, Bryson Mitchell and Nicole Graham; special great-nephews, Jeff Graham and Luke Hanus; a special friend, Frances Vicars and family, and the Mutual Pharmacy gang.

Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap.

Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Rick Spell and the Rev. Hugh Bowers officiating.

Military rites, by Norton VFW Post #4301 and Wise Chapter #56 DAV, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Glencoe Cemetery Mausoleum. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be nephews and friends.

Honorary pallbearers will be retired Pet Dairy employees and the Mutual Pharmacy gang.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Legion United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 628, Big Stone Gap, Va. 24219.
