BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Virgil Blevins, 88, of the Back Valley community, went home to be with the Lord Monday morning (April 17, 2006) at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap.
He was born April 20, 1917, in Big Stone Gap, Va. Virgil was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired from Old Dominion Power Company after 29 years of service.
He was a member of the Legion Memorial United Methodist Church.
He enjoyed gardening, carpentry, and being outdoors. Although he was a prankster, he was loving and generous to all he met and he was dearly loved by all.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Jackson and Minnie Skeen Blevins; brothers, Bascom Blevins, Cecil Blevins, Elmer Blevins, and twin, Vernon (Johnny) Blevins; and sister, Mable Blevins Robinette.
Surviving are his devoted wife of 59 years, Marie Berry Blevins; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca "Becky" and James D. Begley of Big Stone Gap; granddaughters, Angela Begley of Glade Spring, Va., and Cindy Gibson with husband, Silas, of Christiansburg, Va.; sisters, Thelma Smith and Reba Cutting of Big Stone Gap; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Holding Funeral Home in Big Stone Gap.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel with Dr. Ken Sprinkle, Rev. Larry Best and Steve Maddox officiating.
Burial will follow at Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Silas Gibson, Justin Rodeheaver, David Gibson, Jack Lawson, and nephews, Greg Berry and Mark Blevins.
Honorary pallbearers are Skeeter Robinette, Jack Hall, A.R. Blevins, Pedie Poston, other retirees of Old Dominion Power Company, and members of Legion Memorial United Methodist Church.
