Wayne R. Allen, Sr., 94, of Keith Street died Friday, April 26, 2013, at the Charlene Manor Extended Care Facility in Greenfield, Massachusetts.
He was born in Greenfield on March 8, 1919, the son of A. Mason and Mabel Todd Allen. Wayne graduated from Greenfield High School, Class of 1937. In high school, Wayne's nickname was "Trapper" for his love of trapping, hunting and fishing.
When he graduated from high school, Wayne's first job was with the Greenfield Tap & Die and when he was laid off he went to work at Johnson Radiation, then at Hamilton Standard Propeller in East Hartford, Connecticut.
Wayne was drafted into the Army in 1943. He served with the 275th Engineer Combat Battalion 75th Infantry Division. Wayne was awarded three battle stars showing that his unit was in the Battle of the Bulge at the Rhineland and in central Europe. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
After the war, Wayne came back to work for the Millers Falls Tool Company, only to get laid off again, but there was where he met his future wife, Viola Swinko. They married in 1948. She had just died on April 5, 2013, after almost 65 years of marriage.
He went on to work at the Millers Falls Paper Co. in Erving until 1964, when he went to work for the Greenfield Paper Box Company to take over the business with brothers-in-law, Lucien "Phil" Desbien and Charles Swinko. They sold the business in 1976.
In 1954, along his brother-in-law Phil Desbien and Joe Martin, they were pioneers to bring cable to Millers Falls and The Millers Falls Antenna Corp. was born. They ran cables to many homes in Millers Falls. Wayne also was the ski shop manager at Maple Valley Ski Area in West Dummerston, Vermont, with his nephew, Terry Tyler, and family.
Wayne enjoyed riding and working on Indian and Harley Davidson motorcycles and restoring classic cars. His lifelong passion was Lionel Trains where he had many tracks and made most of the stops and towns. He also enjoyed radio controlled model airplanes. Vacationing with family and friends in Maine was another pleasure of Wayne's. He was also a Bulgebuster (Battle of the Bulge).
Wayne leaves two sons, Wayne, Jr. of Northfield and Michael of Gill; one sister, Christine Lawerence of Pompano Beach, Florida; two grandchildren, Greg and Nicole Allen; three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Isabella and Ava, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 17, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at the Green River Cemetery in Greenfield.
