Lucy May Hanson was born on Feb. 24, 1924, at Salt Lake City, Utah, to Melvin and Lillian Beckstrand Hanson. The family moved to Shelley, Idaho when she was about 2 years old and lived on a farm a mile north of town. When she was in third grade, they moved into the town of Shelley. She attended schools in Shelley and graduated from Shelley High School in 1942. She attended one year at Ricks College in Rexburg and then went to live with her cousin in Salt Lake City, where she worked at a radio tube plant for about a year.

Then, she went home to go on a mission. She sent her papers in and was told they weren't sending any missionaries out right then because of World War II. Her cousin, Doris Hanks was going to join the WAVES, the nurses' corps in the US Navy, so she decided to sign up too. They traveled to Pocatello, then went east towards Chicago, where they transferred to buses for New Jersey and New York. She was stationed in Bremerton, Washington.

On June 16, 1945, she married J.F. "Jeff" Ross in Kitsap, Washington; they were blessed with three children, Kathryn, Toni, and Gary. They were later divorced, and she moved back to Idaho.

She married Leland Wells Barney on June 12, 1952, in Lewisville. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on March 10, 1965. She and Leland raised their family in Lewisville. She was employed at the Tolman Store in Lewisville and also did custom work as a seamstress and quilter.

An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served in the Primary, Relief Society, as Sunday School secretary, and for many years as the Ward Librarian.

She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed gardening, canning, quilting, crocheting, any type of handwork, and fishing with her grandchildren.

She passed away on Jan. 23, 2001, at her home in Lewisville at the age of 76, after a nine-month battle with a glioblastoma brain tumor.

Survivors include her husband, Leland Wells Barney of Lewisville; four daughters, Toni (Ron) Morgan of Idaho Falls, Debbie (Randy) Olaveson of Lewisville, Nola Poplin of Flagstaff, Arizona, and Lora (Gary) Kearsley of Lewisville; four sons, Gary (Faith) Barney of Anaheim, California, Richard (Diana) Barney of Lewisville, Ray (Mary Louise) Barney of Lewisville, and Steven (Jana) Barney of Idaho Falls; five sisters, Fonnie Carter and Pearl Johnson, both of Salt Lake City, Grace Workman of Overton, Nevada, Alvalu Larsen of Idaho Falls, and Norma Nielson of St George, Utah; three brothers, Lawrence Hanson of St George, Utah, Ralph Hanson of Pahrump, Nevada, and Keith Hanson, serving a work mission on the Deseret Ranch in St Cloud, Florida; 28 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Kathryn Hyde, and two sisters, Maida Douglas, and Lola Leatham.

Funeral services were held Jan. 27, at the Lewisville LDS 1st Ward, with Bishop Kliff Bramwell officiating. Burial in the Lewisville Cemetery.
