Leland Wells Barney was born July 28, 1923, in Lewisville, Idaho, to Wells and Blanche Lorene Fife Barney. He attended schools in Lewisville, graduated from Midway High Schoool, and attended one year at the University of Idaho in Moscow. He served in the US Marines during World War II in the South Pacific and China.

On June 12, 1952, he married Lucy May Hanson, daughter of Melvin and Lillian Hanson, in Lewisville. Their marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on March 10, 1965. He farmed in Lewisville and raised Shire draft horses.

Leland was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as president of the American Shire Horse Association and was inducted into the Idaho Horsemen Hall of Fame. He was a member of the National Cutter Association and of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Posse. He served as a member of the Lewisville Cemetery Board for 40 years.

He enjoyed showing Shire draft horses with his family throughout the intermountain area; was a horse 4-H Club leader for several years; and enjoyed working with the youth in the area.

He passed away on May 18, 2006, at his home in Lewisville, from cancer. Survivors include his children: Toni (Ron) Morgan of Idaho Falls, Debra (Randy) Olaveson, Lora (Gary) Kearsley and Richard L. (Diana) Barney, all of Lewisville; Nolaa Barney of Flagstaff, Arizona; Gary (Faith) Barney of Anaheim, California; Ray (Mary Louise) Barney of Sugar City; and Steve Barney of Tetonia; sisters, Arlene (Arvel) Alleman of Thatcher, Idaho, and Shirley Rosen of Idaho Falls; 26 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a daughter, Kathryn Hyde.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 22, in the Lewisville 1st Ward Chapel, with Bishop James Gneiting officiating. Burial in the Lewisville Cemetery with military rites performed by the Jefferson Veterans Team.
