Rose Bowen, 68, wife of Otis R Bowen, MD, former governor of the State if Indiana, died at 7:20 am Tuesday, January 21, 1992, at her residence on Rt 1, Donney Brook, Bremen, following a long illness.

Rose Bowen dies at age 68

Rose Bowen, 68, the wife of former Indiana Gov Otis R Bowen, MD, died at 7:20 am, Tuesday, January 21, in her home in the Donnybrook, Bremen, following an extended illness.

Born August 13, 1923, in Plymouth, to Lemuel and Bertha (Erwin) Crothers, she lived in the Bremen and LaPaz area most of her live. On October 18, 1942, she married Merland D Hoschstelter in Greenville, Texas. He preceded her in death on July 24, 1980.

A homemaker, she married Dr Bowen on September 26, 1981, at Pleasant View Lutheran Church, Indianapolis. He survives.

The couple lived in Indianapolis while he taught at Indiana University Medical School. In 1985, they moved to Washington, DC, after Dr Bowen was named Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Ronald Reagan. They returned to Bremen when Reagan's second term ended in 1988.

During her three years in Washington, DC, Mrs Bowen was a member of the Cabinet Wives Association. She was also a member of St Paul's Lutheran Church, Bremen.

Surviving with her husband are two daughters: Donell Housel of Huntertown and Cindy Garner of Plymouth; one step-daughter, Judy McGrew of Singapore; two sons Danny Hochstetler of Goshen and Alton Hochstetler of Argos; three step-sons; Richard H Bowen, of River Falls, Wisconsin, Timothy R Bowen of Statesville, North Carolina and Robert O Bowen of Bremen; 12 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; two great granddaughters; one great grandson, and one sister, Elma Konya of Bremen.

Funeral Services were held at 11 am Friday, January 24, at St Paul's Lutheran Church and Pastor David Kahlenberg of Pleasant View Lutheran Church, Indianapolis, officiated. Burial followed in the Bremen Cemetery.

Mishler Funeral Home, Bremen, was in charge of the arrangements.
