LaVerne E. Ahrens, 89, 1109 Fairmont Lane, in Manitowoc, passed away Sunday
morning, Feb. 9, 2003.

She was born Dec. 19, 1913, to the late Edward and Mayme (Teteak) Strohm in Wabeno, Wis. On Nov. 6, 1934, she was united in marriage to Clifford R. Ahrens in Manitowoc. He preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 1989, on the day of their 55th wedding anniversary.

LaVerne was a dedicated home-maker, raising two sons and two daughters. LaVerne, nicknamed “Sister” by many who knew her, worked part time at the old Art’s 151 Supper Club. After her children were grown she
worked for many years as the noon hour supervisor at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High
School cafeteria, where past students still remember her as “Ma.”

LaVerne was an avid Bridge and Sheepshead player, active in a number of local clubs. She enjoyed her church circle and, with her husband, was a participating member of United Commercial Travelers for many years, serving in many capacities including Grand Counselor in the Lady’s Auxiliary.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Clifford Robert (Barbara) Ahrens, Jr., Manitowoc; and Phillip E. (Jo) Ahrens, Hua Hin, Thailand; two daughters and sons-in-law, Audrey (Richard) Knudten, Goodyear, Ariz. and Mequon; and Mary Lou (John) Scanlan, De Pere. She is also survived by her brother and three sisters-in-law, Lester (Margaret) Strohm, Two Rivers; Marie Knope, Manitowoc; Leone Strohm, Green Bay; and a special niece, Agatha Olson, Manitowoc; special friends, Carol and Andy Houston, Manitowoc.
LaVerne was a loving grandmother to 13 grandchildren, Bob and Christopher Klein, Teri Wagner, Lisa Nothem, DeAnne Binversie, Tim, Patrick, Douglas and Joseph Ahrens, Julie Tittl, Nancy Ahrens-McFarlin, Jeffrey and Phillip Scanlan. She adored her 22 great-grandchildren, Katie McIntyre, Molly and Jessica Klein, Taylor and Austin Wagner, Eric, Adam and Bryan Nothem, Lauren Binversie, Justin, Kimberly, Matthew and Lillith Ahrens, Heide Martin, Jesse Tittl, Courtney and Jacob McFarlin, Madeline, Olivia, Jillean, Kiera and McKenna Scanlan. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers, George, Elhart and Vernon Strohm, Two Rivers and Orville Strohm, Oconto.

The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Visitation will continue Thursday morning at St. Paul United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 411 Reed Avenue, Manitowoc. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Larry McCann with burial at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. The family wishes to thank the kind people of Unity Hospice and Harbor House Memory Care Center, Green Bay, where she was a resident for the past three weeks, for their care and support to LaVerne and her family.
