James was the oldest child of James Borer (1803 - 1861) and Francis Wiffin (1813 - 1873), and oldest brother of Miriam Elizabeth Borer Howden. He out-lived two wives, the first being Kate "Kitty" Longley whom he married on 3 September 1850 and the second Emma Baker on 7 Aug 1893, both marriages in Islingon, London. He owned his own catering business for many years. He had no children of his own, so in addition to his wives working with him, he also hired one of his grand nephews, Walter Kirton, son of Frank Kirton and Frances Kate Howden. James is buried in the same plot as his sister Miriam and her husband Jack Howden. All three names are on the marker.
