SIMON — Memorial inurnment services for Marion Almenia Culwell, 80, of Simon are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, at Simon Cemetery with the Rev. Joshua Gunter officiating. Services are under the direction and care of Alexander Funeral Home of Wilson.

Almenia was born December 28, 1932, at Simon, to the late Thomas Marion "Curly" Cullwell Jr. and Altha Nora (Sexton) Culwell. She departed this life Friday, May 3, 2013, at her farm in Simon.

Almenia attended school initially at Simon and graduated high school at Meadowbrook. She then attended college at Murray State College for almost two years where she majored in agriculture. Almenia spent a few years in Michigan State and then moved to Ft. Worth, Texas, where she was a foster mom to several disabled children before she was given her wonderful son, Billy Bob. Soon after, she returned to the family ranch. Almenia has been a caregiver all of her life. She worked at Turner Schools as a Teachers Aide and Librarian while her son was in school, then continued to help her dad and brother, Sonny on the family ranch. She was a member of the Eastman Baptist Church.

Her parents preceded her in death.

Survivors include her son, Billy Bob Ball of the home in Simon; nieces, Janette Carlile and husband, Aaron of Overbrook and Cheryl Culwell of Davis; great-nieces, Brandi Carlile of Oklahoma City and Lori Mai and husband, Wayne of Overbrook; great-great-nieces, Kaylyn and Tylar of Overbrook; and numerous other family and friends.

Honorary bearers are James Williams and Don Culwell.

LOVE COUNTY — An ongoing family dispute was apparently the motive behind the slayings of elderly Simon siblings Friday night.

Aaron Eugene Carlile, 65, was arrested following interviews with OSBI agents Wednesday afternoon. The Overbrook man was booked into the Love County Jail pending two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the gunshot slayings of his father-in-law, 78-year-old Thomas "Sonny" Culwell and his aunt, Marion "Almenia" Culwell, 80. Carlile reportedly confessed to the double murders, claiming his dislike of his father-in-law sparked the killing. Search warrants executed earlier in the day produced corroborating evidence linking Carlile to the crimes.

District Attorney Craig Ladd praised the OSBI for efforts that brought a swift conclusion to the case.

"I'm really impressed with the OSBI — Bob Horn and the other agents involved in this investigation. I'm very appreciative of how quickly they worked, both in their investigation and getting the reports to my office," Ladd said.

The bodies of the siblings were found by coon hunters about 1 1/2 miles from their Simon residence about 10:30 p.m. Friday. Love County Sheriff Joe Russell said at the time, Almenia Culwell's disabled son, who lived with the siblings, called friends who were hunting when he became concerned the pair had not returned home from fixing a fence. Both bodies were discovered near their pickup. Russell said the victims' bodies had been sent to the state medical examiner's office for autopsy, but indicated it appeared both had died from gunshot wounds.

The sheriff immediately requested the assistance of the OSBI.

Tuesday Jessica Brown, OSBI spokesperson, announced the agency was offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the capture and conviction of the killer. No information was immediately available on whether or not reward money was involved in the Carlile's arrest.

Funeral services for the siblings are set for 10 a.m. Friday in Simon Cemetery.
