Joseph married Judith Briggs (of Taunton, Massachusetts) on April 9, 1743, in Attleboro Massachusetts.

Joseph and Judith had the following children: Benjamin Tower (born September 22, 1744), Joseph Tower (born April 28, 1746), Nathaniel Tower (born June 28, 1748), Joshua Tower (born June 30, 1750), Lucy Smith (born October 13, 1752), William Tower (born March 6, 1755), and Nancy Maxwell.

Joseph died on route from Newport, Rhode Island to Nova Scotia (now New Brunswick). He was traveling with wife, Judith, three sons, Benjamin, Joseph and William and two of their daughters, Nancy and Lucy. They were part of the Planter Migration from the American colonies to the Canadian maritime provinces.

Joseph is the great-great-great-great-grandfather of:
-John Goodwin Tower, U.S. Senator from Texas
