Enlisted at Greenfield NY, 19 years old, to serve three years August 8, 1862. Mustered in as Corporal, Co. F 115th NY Vol. Infantry August 12, 1862. Promoted Sergeant and First Sergeant. Wounded “slightly in the breast” “Breast [k]nocked in by explosives[?]” Feb. 20, 1864 at the battle of Olustee, Fla. where Co. F “went into the fight with 60 men, and came out with only 25.” Commissioned Second Lieutenant, May 17, 1865, with rank from February 1, 1865, vice C. Kline promoted. Mustered in as Second Lieutenant, June 8, 1865. Mustered out with company, June 17, 1865 at Raleigh, N.C. “Lewis S. Bailey (Dem.) of Oconto [WI], born in Saratoga County, N.Y. December 26, 1842. Received a common school education. Is by occupation a real estate and collection agent. Came to Wisconsin in 1876, and settled at Oconto, where he now resides. Has been justice of the peace since 1878; was public administrator 1885-‘87. Is at present chief of the Oconto fire department; was elected county judge in 1890; which position he now holds. Enlisted in Co. F, 115th New York Vol. Infantry...Participated with his regiment in thirty different engagements, including Harper’s Ferry, Cold Harbor, Olustee, Fort Fisher, Drury’s Bluff and the many engagements of the Army of the James in 1864. Was elected to the assembly in 1890...“ (From State of Wisconsin Blue Book 1891) Filed for a pension Feb. 9, 1880. Died at Oconto, WI, buried at Evergreen Cemetery.
