NEW PALTZ - Ernest B. Ahlberg, 89, a lifelong resident of New Paltz, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001 at Ten Broeck Commons in Lake Katrine. Mr. Ahlberg was a police dispatcher and he worked at the New Paltz Police Dept. He also worked at the New Paltz School Central System for many years, at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, the New York Dept. of Transportation and the Ulster County Sheriffs Dept. He was a charter member of The Firemans Burn Fund of Ulster, Dutchess, Sullivan and Orange counties; active in the Albany Medical Burn Wing and Westchester Medical Center Burn Center, Valhalla and past chief and president of New Paltz Volunteer Fire Dept., in which he served 65 years as an active member. He was also involved in the Ulster County Fire Chiefs and Fire Police Associations; the AARP; the VFW and American Legion of New Paltz; the Mason, Adonia Lodge and he was very active in fund raising for many fire groups and other organizations. Born on May 21, 1912 in New Paltz, he was the son of Pontus and Grace Simpson Ahlberg. He was married to Harriett Ahlberg. Mrs. Ahlberg predeceased him on Jan. 1, 2001. He is survived by a daughter, Christine Ahlberg of Liberty; a son-in-law, Russell Bogie of Liberty; a niece, Mary Jo Elliott of New Paltz; many other nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Fred and Harry Ahlberg and a sister, Alsie Lewis. Calling hours will be held Monday, Nov. 12, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Copeland Funeral Home, Inc., 162 So. Putt Crs. Rd., New Paltz. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Myron Ronk will officiate. Burial will follow at New Paltz Rural Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the New Paltz Fire Dept., New Paltz. Arrangements by Copeland Funeral Home, Inc., 162 So. Putt Crs. Rd., New Paltz, (845) 255-1212.
