Mother:
Lois (Billings) Church

1) Mehitable Williams (married 24 Dec 1801, Amherst, MA)
2) Sarah (married 11 May 1820, Amherst, MA)

Children:
Horace (mem. #107870944; he is incorrectly listed as Giles' son; 29 Oct 1803-24 Dec 1867, Kenton, OH)

occupation: wheelwright

cause of death: consumption

There has been some information conflict with Elijah being confused with his father (Giles) with children. My (unsubstantiated) theory is that Elijah's official name was "Giles Elijah" & he was called "Elijah" to avoid confusion with his father or that Elijah's middle name was "Giles". I use the wives to confirm which child belonged to which couple.

"Our record book (the volume that is an accounting), shows that Elijah and his first wife Mehitable had 7 children. Clarissa was their first and died on 1/25/1803 as an infant but we have no other information as to where she is buried. In fact, this book does not state where anyone is buried – our records from back then just do not list that information. Their other 6 children were Horace, Alonzo, Theodosia, Cephas, Nancy and Mary H, and none died as infants.
Elijah and his second wife Sarah had 5 children, and our book states that their first 3 children died as infants on the dates you listed (but again, not where they're buried). Their other two children died in the 1850s."

According to the librarian in the Special Collections Dept. of the Jones Library, Amherst: "It is possible that no record was kept of the internments that you can't find. According to James A Smith's "Families of Amherst, Massachusetts",: "One of the first genealogists to use the Amherst records for research was the Rev. Sylvester Nash of Essex, Ct who traveled to Amherst before 1853. He compiled and published a Nash Family Genealogy in 1853. His comment as to the records then available to him was that not much is known of the old families there ‘owing to the very defective records of that town.'"
