Abraham was the third of six children born to John J. Ackerman and Priscilla Boon Ackerman. He was raised at Morrisania, New Jersey and New York City where his father was a carpenter. Abraham married to Nellie Augusta Smith on 7 September 1892 at Rockland Lake, New York. They made their home first at that place. They relocated to Jersey City, New Jersey about 1900 where he was a carpenter. They relocated to Paterson, New Jersey about 1910 where he was a department store cabinet maker. The relocated permanently to Prospect Park, New Jersey about 1920 where he was a house carpenter. Abraham and Nellie were the parents of four children; Irene M. Ackerman, Clifford Bruce Ackerman, Seymour Fred Ackerman, and Russell Frank Day Ackerman.
