Joe Hicks Smith, 67, of Blacksburg, SC, the Cherokee Falls community, died Monday, March 18, 2002, in Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Shelby, NC.

Born in Belwood, NC, he was the husband of Phyllis (Roberts) Smith and son of the late Lester Smith and Selva (Hicks) Smith.

Retired from Hoechst Celanese, he was a member of St. Peter's Methodist Church in Bellwood, attended Cherokee Falls Baptist Church and was a member of Buffalo Masonic Lodge 202.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Tottle.

Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, Joey Smith of the home, Tony Smith of Shelby, Tim Smith and wife, Cindi, of Shelby, and Bud Allman and wife, Amy, of Fingerville, NC; daughters, Carol Cobb and husband, Robert, of Gaffney, Ann Wyatt and husband, David, of Gaffney, and Debbie Chandler and husband, George, of Smyrna; a brother, Don Smith of Bellwood; sisters, Grace Elliott of Shelby, Hilda Crotts of Charlotte and Jeri Bassett of Matthews, NC; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Cherokee Falls Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Knotts officiating. Burial was in Frederick Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers were Josh Smith, Ray Marshall, Phillip Ellis, Danny Peace, Richard Peace and Brian Tindall.

Memorials could be made to Cherokee Falls Baptist Church Building Fund, 109 School St., Blacksburg, SC 29702.
