Ben Cleaver Lewis, 76, died May 12, 2005.
He was born March 17, 1929, In Canton, a son of James O. "Ollie" Lewis and Alma Cooksey Lewis. He married Diane G. Roark of Independence, MO, June 28, 1958.
He graduated Canton High School in 1947 and from Culver-Stockton College in 1951. After discharge from the US Marine Corps, he was employed by Fairbanks and Morse of Beloit, Wisc. for one year, then spent four years employed by the Hubinger Co. in Keokuk, IA. In January of 1960, he joined Hindman Sales Co in Dallas, Tex., where he helped to expand their coverage to include all of Texas and Oklahoma. During in career in the Food Industry, he was an active member of the Institute of Food Technology and the National and the National Food Brokers Association. In 1980, he bought Hindman Sales Co. and later changed its name to Ben C. Lewis Co.
In 1981, he was named Broker of the Year for California Canners and Growers Coop. In 1986, he was selected as Broker of the Year for the CVC Division of General Foods. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association, a member of the Edmund Burke Society and the Leadership Institute. Received the Certificate of Honor from the Board of Judician Watch. He was a longtime member of Valley View Christian Church, Dallas, Texas.
Survivors include a daughter, Patty Lewis Prokop and husband Spencer, and their son Benjamin Chase Prokop; sisters, Margaret O'Hara and Marilyn Riley both of Quincy, IL, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, and older brother James "Jim" Lewis, San Antonio, Texas, and a younger brother, William "Bill" Lewis, Lancaster, MO
Visitation was Monday May 16, 2005, at the Starkman Hillcrest Funeral Home, Dallas, Texas.
Funeral services were at Sparkman Hillcrest Northwest Highway Chapel on Tuesday, May 17, 2005, with graveside services following. Rev. Ron Key officiated the services.
Memorials may be made to Lakewood Montessori School, 6210 E. Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, Texas 75214 or The Salvation Army.
