US Army Medical Corps

Dr. Rodney Leonard McKnight, died Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center. Born in Charlotte, he was a member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Bykota Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill and UNC School of Medicine. He served his internship and residency in the Department of Surgery and his residency in anesthesiology at UNC School of Medicine, Chapel Hill and was also an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at UNC School of Medicine.
Dr. McKnight was a retired anesthesiologist. He was a member of the Cleveland Memorial Hospital Medical Staff in 1964 until retirement in 1990. He was a diplomat of American Board of Anesthesiology. He was a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, North Carolina Medical Society, Cleveland County Medical Society, North Carolina Society of Anesthesiologists, and the American Medical Association.
He served in the U. S. Army Medical Corps in Fort Bragg at Womack Army Hospital. He was in the Army Medical Corps for two years and the U. S. Army Corps Reserves for three years.
He will be remembered for his love of family, love of church, and generous spirit.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy Bowman McKnight, M.D. and Martha Leonard McKnight; his wife, Betty Lowrance McKnight; nephew, Roy McKnight III; aunt, Carolyn Billmire; uncle, William P. Leonard, M. D. and his faithful dog, Chelsea.
He is survived by his wife, Sara Daves McKnight of Mooresboro; son and daughter-in-law, Rodney Leonard McKnight, Jr. & Debbie McKnight of Statesville; daughter, Susan M. Cooper of Thomasville; grandsons, Gary & Paul Cooper of Thomasville; brother and sister-in-law, Roy & Mary Jane McKnight of Charlotte; step son-in-law and step daughter, John and Sandy Reese of Weaverville; grandsons, Jake, Cody and Travace Reese of Weaverville; nephew, William McKnight of Charlotte; aunt, Mary Cary Leonard of Atlanta.
The family graveside service will be at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby
