Pioneering librarian. A founder of the American Library Association in 1876 and its first president. He was librarian of the Boston Athenaeum, 1856–69, and organized the public libraries of Cincinnati, 1871–73, and Chicago, 1874–87, as well as the Newberry Library, 1887–94, and the U.S. Naval Academy library. He compiled the first general index to U.S. periodicals, Poole's Index to Periodical Literature in 1848, superceded in the early 20th Century by the Readers Guide to Periodical Literature.
