Mary was born near 8 miles east of Paris, Tn. where her grandfather had homesteaded about 1825, probably in the Sunny Side or Oakland communities. They attended a Baptist Church east of Paris; pastor was named Browning (very likely frontier preacher Jacob Browning).

Her father was one of the earliest settlers to the hill country of north central Arkansas, moving there in 1839 with his brothers, Thomas & John.
