Mrs. Sarah Jensen Beck, wife of Isaac Beck of Leland was found dead Friday evening under a small quantity of straw at the family home.
The body was discovered by her son, Reed, who was giving fresh straw to the cows for a bed. He had taken two forkfuls of straw from the fallen heap when his fork struck something, and stooping to examine it, discovered his mothers feet. The young man ran to the house and summoned help. Antrim Beck, a brother-in-law, and other neighbors, removed the straw from the woman's body, finding that she evidently been smothered to death.
Dr. Josph Hughes was summoned and found that she had been dead some time. He expressed the opinion that she must have fainted and as she was a strong, healthy woman, she could easily have extricated herself from the straw otherwise.
Mrs. Beck was last seen alive about 9:30 Friday morning when she went to take care of some little chickens. It was believed that she was pulling straw from the stack to give the young chickens fresh straw, when the stack, top heavy from recent rains, fell on her. when she did not return to the house at noon no alarm was felt as members of the family thought she had gone to spend the day with one of her daughters or a neighbor. Her husband is in ill-health from rheumatism but is not confined to his bed.
