B-24H #41-29259 'Our Baby' took off on a mission to a target at Munich, Germany. The ship broke up due to a collision with another aircraft, B-24 #42-95171 'Diana-Mite'. Weather is said to have been very bad during the flight. Sgt Sang died while assisting the Radio Operator SSgt Dean R Smith. The crew members were~

Deceased Name: JAMES RADFORD MARTIN

Jackson - JAMES RADFORD MARTIN, 88, formerly of Memphis, TN, retired Vice President Senior Retail Loan Officer of Union Planters Bank, died February 7, 2006. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, February 9 and service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, February 10 at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel. Born in Dallas, TX, July 8 1917, Mr. Martin's family moved to Memphis when he was two years old. He was in 453rd Bomb Group WWII 1st Lt., flew B17's and B24's in missions over France and Germany. He also had his Glider Pilot wings. Returning from a mission to Munich at 26,000 feet, his left wing man hit his B24. Four men from the crew of nineteen survived. He was severely impaired from the collision and after solitary confinement of several weeks on bread and water, he was sent to Stalag Luft 1 on the Baltic Seas. There he spent the rest of the war. Lt. Martin was awarded the Purple Heart and other medals. He served in the Air Force Reserve in Memphis. He is a member of the MidSouth Ex-Prisoner's of War and member of Caterpillar Club. Mr. Martin attended Southwestern (Rhodes) College where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order, graduated from the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University, was in one of the first Leadership Training Courses held at Southwestern. Mr. Martin was on the Memphis and Shelby County Health and Welfare Planning Commission when food stamps and breakfasts for needy children in the schools were implemented. He was President of East Memphis Lions Club, where he had 25 years perfect attendance, was a member of Schoolfield United Methodist Church for 50 years, where he served as Trustee, Chairman of the Board, Sunday school teacher, and Treasurer of District Extension Society that helped build new churches. He was a Cub master and Scoutmaster of Troop 304 sponsored by his church for 11 years. After retirement from Union Planters, he was the driving force to start up Tennessee Bank at Millington, was a consultant for Paul Barret's Peoples Bank and Shelby Bank at Bartlett. For security, he and his wife had to leave their beloved "Minor Hill" and moved to Jackson, TN. They became members of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Minor Martin; his daughter, Jan Martin Hamilton and her husband, Bruce, of Jackson; a son, James R. Martin, Jr. and his wife, Helen of Dunwoody, GA; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Martin and Leigh Hamilton and her husband, Juan Cabello; and a sister, Elizabeth Martin Barker of Memphis. The family requests any memorials be sent to St. Luke's in Jackson or the American Red Cross that kept him from starving when he was a POW.
