In August 1870 the 11 months aged Garrit, born in Illinois, very probably in Thornton, his father Okke Vanzanten (36 y, Holland, farmer), his mother Mary (29, Holland), his siblings Emily (9, Illinois), John (7, Illinois), Jacob (6, Illinois), Jane (5, Illinois) and Dienke (3, Illinois) lived at an own home, worth $2400, in Thornton, Cook County, just south of the Dutch truck farmers settlement South Holland and Chicago.
Two homes further on Jacob [Okkes] Vanzanten (59, Holland, farmer, an own home worth $6600) and his wife Dienke [Dieuwerke] (63, Holland) lived. They are Gerrit's grandparents. In between lived Martje (29, Holland) with her husband Henry Valt and two children. Martje is very likely an aunt Vanzanten of Gerrit.

In 1880 Garrett (10), his father Ockie Vanzanten (47, farmer), his mother Mary (37), his siblings Jacob (16, laborer), Jane (14), Dora (12), Gertie (7), Alt (4) and his grandmother Jane Vinke (77) lived still in Thornton, Cook County, Illinois.

Gerrit Van Zanten married on 29 June 1898 in Cook County, Illinois at the age of 30 years to the two years older Nellie K Anker, who was also born in Illinois.

On 2 June 1900 Gerrit Van Zanten (31 y, farmer) and his wife Nellie (33 y) lived at an own farm in the Dutch truck farmers village South Holland, 147th Street, Thornton Township, just south of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.

On 1 July 1900 their son Edward van Zanten was born, very probably in South Holland.

Gerrit Van Zanten died in December 1900 at the age of 31 years, very probably at his farm in South Holland, Thornton Township, Cook County, Illinois.

His widow Nellie Anker remarried in 1907 in Chicago at the age of 38 years to the two years older widower Walter Swets. She died in 1944 at the age of 76 years.
