He served during the Civil War with the 76th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (also known as the "Keystone Zouaves", first as Captain of Company D, then as Major and commander of the unit. During his 3 years of service with the 76th Pennsylvania he participated in the July 1863 attacks on Fort Wagner, South Carolina, as well as engagements at Fort Pulaski, Successionville, Pocotalico, Chesterfield Heights, Drewery's Bluff, Virginia,The June 1864 Battle of Cold Harbor, and the mine explosion and the ensuing Battle of the Crater at Deep Bottom, Virginia. On his participation in the last battle his brigade commander, Lieutenant Colonel William B. Coan of the 48th New York Infantry, stated in his official report "Too much praise cannot be awarded to Major Diller, commanding Seventy-sixth Pennsylvania Volunteers". His unit also assisted in building the platform for the union cannon "Swamp Angel".
