Nicholas Fry (aka: Frye) was born January 17, 1827 in Richhill Twnp in Pennsylvania. Known to family members as "Nickels" Fry.

Son of Peter Fry and Sarah Chapman, grandson of Abraham Fry Sr and Elisabeth Winters.

Brother to Anna, James,William, Margaret, David, Isaac, and Aron Fry.

Nicholas married Elisabeth Toland on January 4, 1849 in West Finley Twnp, Pennsylvania.

He was father to Susan, Nancy, Catherine, William, George, and John Fry.

Nicholas was a carpenter, woodworker and undertaker by trade. (Many cabinet makers were undertakers at that time in history.)

He enlisted as a Private in Company A, 11th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania on 20 September 1864 at Wheeling, WV with the Union Army. He was in unit 2098. He earned the Distinguished Service medal.

Following his enlistment, his company saw action at Dabney's Mills VA, Hatcher's Run VA, Gravelly Run VA, and Five Forks VA.

Nicholas was taken ill by a fever and he later died at Armory Square Hospital, one of the largest Civil War hospitals in the area was located on the National Mall, where Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum stands today.

He was later buried at Salem Methodist Cemetery. He lives on in family lore and is well regarded by his descendants.
