At the residence of his son-in-law, J.D. Francis, Esq., near Darlington, on Monday, Jan. 31, 1870, Charles Gould Otis, aged 79 years. Charles Gould Otis was born in 1791 in New London County, Conn.; removed to what is now Madison County, New York, in 1798; removed to Wisconsin in 1849, and located at Beloit; removed to Darlington in the spring of 1855, where he has since resided.
Mr. Otis was one of that class of men who always inspired confidence in his fellow me, as is evidenced by his being in public life, and holding important official positions a very large portion of his life. In every position to which he has been called, however, he has always been found able, faithful, and willing to do his duty. His disposition was such that mental sunshine always followed him. Few men were more charitable to the deserving poor, and all will miss his pleasant genial countenance. Of much more than ordinary ability, he belonged to that class of men whom the world so much regrets, and who are becoming so few; although belonging to the old school of gentlemen, his mind was always ahead of the progress of the day, readily adopting the useful and discarding the humbug. Enterprizing, thorough, and always true, his success in life was such as he deserved. His illness has been long and painful, but borne without a murmur, and he died surrounded by his children and friends, fully prepared for that Lodge above for which he so long labored.
Mr. Otis was, probably, the oldest Past Master Mason in the State, and carried the gave longer than is the lot of most men. His remains were followed to the grave, Wednesday, by a large concourse of his brethren of the Mystic tie, who deeply feel the loss of his bright example and faithfulness to the craft. The community feel the loss of a good man, and his children mourn the death of a kind, indulgent parent to whom they have ever looked with pride and love.
