Mrs. Elizabeth Brown Jarrett, aged 66 years, who has been in poor health for several years, became desperate and mentally unbalanced Tuesday morning and jumped into Smith River at Bassett, in that part of the town known as New Bassett. Before she could be rescued, she was drowned.

Because of the recent heavy rains and the swiftness of the river, the body was carried down the river more than a mile before it was recovered an hour later.

The deceased is survived by her husband, Mr. William H. Jarrett, and by six sons and five daughters: S. L. Jarrett of Fieldale; J. W., J. B., Wheeler and Brown Jarrett of Bassett; B. M. Jarrett of Martinsville; Mesdames Lee Stone and G. B. Cummings of Martinsville; C. M. Fretwell of Blackberry; S. A. Perdue of Gainsville, Fla. and W. L. Stone of Henry. She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. J. H. Johnson of Henry; Mrs. J. R. Mason and Mrs. Robert Purdue of Gainsville, Fla., and by two half brothers, W. R. and J. W. Wells of Gainsville, Fla.

The funeral was on Wednesday afternoon from Blackberry Baptist Church, of which she had been a member since childhood.
